Why washable diapers?

You may think, what a lot of work all those washable tie diapers, but it is not that much work thanks to the tip about the ‘Bidet shower douche’ which I will tell you more about later, washable tie diapers are an honorable, sober and important task that certainly belongs to a Christian.

The word of God tells us in Revelation 11:18 that God destroys those who destroy the earth.

This is written about the time that will soon come called

Jacob’s trouble. (Jeremiah 30:7)

Therefore, as instruction in righteousness, we believe that every christian must bear their responsibility in taking good care of nature and the earth.

Revelation 11:18 And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

It is not responsible to throw away 5,000 to 7,200 diapers per child, this is a sin, we should take good care of the earth.

On top of that, it has to do with sluggishness / laziness, people nowadays no longer want to roll up their sleeves and work but would rather throw away than repair or clean and reuse something. Too lazy to wash. Sluggishness / slothfulness / laziness is also a sin.

Proverbs 18:9 He also that is slothful in his work is brother to him that is a great waster.

As men, we have been given our own will and have been placed above the animals, we have been given dominion over the earth and also over the animals, but we must use this dominion well.

Genesis 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

Gen 9:2 And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the air, upon all that moveth upon the earth, and upon all the fishes of the sea; into your hand are they delivered.

Washable tie diapers are a good deed and testimony to the lost world. The woman can be a virtuous woman in this. (Proverbs 31:10-31)

1 Timothy 5:14 I will therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give none occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

Do not give the adversary a chance to speak reproachfully about Jesus Christ, make the difference clear, be a good witness to the people around you, be good for the earth and your family.

Washable diapers have been a logical choice for us because we believe it is important to produce as little waste as possible and want to take good care of the earth. We also love natural materials as God intended, and these natural materials always win from the synthetic ones, it is much healthier and has many benefits for our children.

Which diaper system did we choose and why?

We choose washable tie diapers made of organic cotton with woollen overpants, the advantages of which include:

  • 100% organic cotton, healthy for the child and the earth
  • Cotton and wool, skin-friendly and healthy natural material
  • Dries quickly on the washing line
  • 1 size from birth to potty training (except the woollen overpants)
  • Affordable
  • Child becomes potty trained faster, this is because it feels better if it has urinated or pressed/pooped, this is experienced as less pleasant and therefore there is more motivation to practice using the potty.
  • Fun to do, and the children enjoy helping
  • Working with the hands is good for the body, sitting still is damaging to the body
  • Educational

We have tie diapers from the brand Disana from Germany, the diaper consists of:

  • a cotton diaper with binding cords (Disana Tie Nappy, tie nappies)
  • an cotton absorbent insert cloth (molton flannel cotton liner)
  • and a woollen overpant / trousers (Merino Wool Diaper Cover)

You can use different inserts for these diapers from Disana, the insert is where the poop comes on and the pee soaks into.

Disana 40x40cm molton / flannel diaper liner cloths are used as standard, or 80x80cm hydrophilic cloths (80 x 80 cm woven muslin cloth). We chose for the more compact 40×40 molton liners.

To make the diaper waterproof, put a double-layer woollen overpants from Disana around the diaper. This is available in different sizes, you need 4 of each size to be able to use it comfortably and wash and dry it in case one gets dirty and needs cleaning.

For the newborn baby we recommend starting with size S (62/68) or XS. You can also buy the larger sizes later when your child grows.

Sometimes if poop accidentally gets on the wool pants because your baby had moved a lot and you noticed it too late, you can immediately hose this spot off with the bidet sprayer at the toilet, then let it dry. You do not have to spray the entire wool pants wet, only wash the spot that has become dirty.

See also the chapter ‘bidet shower’ for more information about the bidet douche.

We have washable diapers from the Disana brand because they are of high quality and therefore last a long time and are softer than the other brands we have tried, and this has now lasted the 2nd and 3rd child, organic cotton washable diapers from the Disana brand. Top quality.

You save a lot of money:

Washable diapers are much cheaper, especially if they last another child, then the 2nd and 3rd child are free.

Child is toilet trained faster:

Children feel better when they wet their diaper with cloth diapers.

Our daughter was completely potty trained during the day at 1 year and 9 months, she was no longer wearing a diaper. She indicated when she needed to go to the potty and we had no more accidents. From the age of 2 years and 2 months she was also completely potty trained at night and did never wear a diaper anymore.

As soon as your baby is born, use the diaper in combination with the woollen overpants. After a few days you will notice that the diaper does not absorb enough moisture and you will start using an insert/liner. By adding one or more inserts you increase the absorbency of the diaper, for example at night. Usually only 1 insert per diaper is used and more than enough.

This is a one-size diaper. It can be folded as needed in both the front and back to make it small enough to fit a newborn.

How much diapers do you need?

The amount of diapers you need depends a bit on how often you plan to wash the diapers. And also the age of your child. Newborn babies use more diapers than a 1.5 year old baby/child.

We have 20-25 diapers per wash, then the bucket is full, and our washing machine can not fit more. This is after about 3 days with our 1 year old son. Try not to wait longer than 3 days before washing for hygiene reasons.

This way you have an average of 25 diapers in use, and 25 diapers to dry on the washing line.

You can also use this amount of diapers for 2 children at the same time, if you have for ensample a baby of 1 month old and a baby child of 1,5 yours old. You then only need to wash more often.

What do you need?

  • 50 cotton diaper with binding cords, (Tie Nappy)

  • 60 inserts / liners (Molton flannel cotton insert / liner)

  • 4 woollen overpants per size (Merino Wool Diaper Cover)

In total we bought 50 tie diapers and 60 molton flannel inserts / liners 40×40 cm. Plus the woollen overpants, 4 per size.

This is more than average advice, but we do not want to have to worry about having not enough diapers, it is nice to have a few extra diapers and do the laundry the next day when you want to.

We also have 3 diapers in the car as standard in a diaper bag, and all in all you can use the diapers very comfortably without the feeling that they are always running out and you have to start washing immediately because otherwise you would not be able to have enough diapers for the next day.

The use of washable diapers

step by step

First we will fold the ‘new’ diapers so that we have 1 or 2 drawers full of folded diapers. When the baby is born you will be ready to start.

1. Take the flannel cloth of 40×40, or your hydrofile cloth of 80×80 and fold it.

2. Fold the molton flannel cloth twice so that you get a long cloth.

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 3

3. Take the diaper by the binding cords, place it on the table and fold the top narrow and wide edges together.

Psalm 127:3
Lo, children are an heritage of the LORD: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

Your baby child is born, hopefully everything went all well, praise the Lord, congratulations with this miracle! Now it is time to put on the diaper.

Tip: Do not wash your newborn baby with soap during the first weeks. Only wipe the baby ‘if necessary’ with a little room temperature water and a washcloth. But never use commercial soap. The baby’s skin is very sensitive and has its own natural fats that protect it and you want to preserve these fats.

Of course, the excess skin fat from birth in difficult places such as the neck, groin and behind the ears must be dabbed away within a few days after birth.

A shower or bath with water that is too hot causes extreme skin degreasing and should not be done.

It is best to wash children only with water, running water cleans well, and you do not want to disturb a healthy skin with the wrong soap.

(Make sure you pay close attention and air to the armpits and neck and behind the ears, between the toes, etc., make sure the skin is nice and dry. Possibly with healing wool on the bottom or a bow hat for the neck.)

Your baby has peed or pooped

and the adventure is about to begin

When your baby has urinated or pooped, take off the diaper and put it in a handy 10 liter bucket that you have on the changing table.

(When the bucket is full at the end of the day, you can spray the poop from off the diaper inserts with the bidet douche for the cleanest result)

(see the step about the bidet shower further in the booklet)

We really liked this Ikea bucket because it has an airtight seal and a handy valve lid.

(HÅLLBAR Ton met deksel, lichtgrijs, 10 L )

(Handy, good for the planet, and money-saving are

‘Washable buttock / cheeky wipes’ for wiping the buttocks.)

When your baby has pooped, clean the bottom with a washable bottom wipe / cheeky wipe and also put it in the bucket on the changing table.

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 14

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 15

These wipes are ready in a stack of approximately 20 or 40 pieces, in a bowl, folded once in half, the wipes have been wet / moistened with water in advance.

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 16

If the poop sticks very much to the bottom, you can also hold the bottom under the tap / shower, because sometimes rubbing a lot with the wipes to remove the poop can cause the baby to have sore bottoms, then water is a lot softer, easy and cleaner.

If your child gets sore bottom over time, it is always good to occasionally apply raw extra virgin unprocessed coconut oil or homemade chickweed salve.

(see the ‘Chickweed recipe’ on the website under downloads / health and family)

Coconut oil

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 17

Chickweed salve

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 18

Our experience is that it sometimes works very well not to put a diaper on our child, but only to put on pants for a boy or a leggings for a girl, and then let the buttocks air dry, sore buttocks and little red wounds need fresh air to dry and heal.

If you put on a diaper, you will only realise much later that your child has urinated, then the sore bottom has already become moist in the diaper for a while and this slows down recovery.

Sometimes it is amazing to see that if you do not apply anything to the buttocks, they actually heal.

After a while you can start practicing using the potty. When you take off the diaper, it is always good to have a potty on the changing table, then you can practice peeing, it helps to some make moaning noises, your child is more likely to think that he or she is going to urinate when they hear this, sometimes it also helps when they hear running water.

Put on a clean diaper

We then place a new diaper on the changing pad and put on a clean diaper.

1. Place a new diaper under your child on the changing pad.

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 19

2. Fold the molton (flannel) insert / liner around your child.

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 20

3. Fold the two top flaps around the baby.

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 21

4. Fold the bottom up.

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 22

5. Lift your child slightly at the bottom and wrap the strings around your child from the back.

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 23

6. Tie a bow in the diaper.

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 24

Do not tie the bow too tight so that there is room for your child to breathe. Babies and children breathe with their stomach, this is also the best way to breathe for adults.

Also make sure that the diaper is not too tight in the crotch. (underwear that is too tight for men can reduce fertility/fruitfulness, so do not buy tight underwear as a man)

Then we take the ‘double-layer knitted’ wool overpants and put them on. Double-layer knitted wool is very nice because it makes the woollen pants much more water-repellent than single-layer wool pants.

What is your favorite color?

We chose a color because it is less staining.

The colored pants remain much cleaner to look at than the natural color. You can remove a stain with ox gall soap.

The mustard yellow color in particular is an easy color.

Choose a different color for each size, for the first size 4 yellow wool overpants and for the next size 4 gray wool overpants etc., so you can easily tell which size it is, and especially with two children in diapers if you get with child quickly one after the other, it is useful to use a different color per size.

Cleaning the diapers
and using the bidet

When the diaper bucket on the changing table is full at the end of the day, we will rinse it out, save yourself the trouble and do this when the children are in bed, after supper.

Take the bucket from the changing table to the toilet, as well as a low stool to sit on, and get started.

Sit on the stool in front of the toilet, raise the seat, take the first diaper and see if it is a pee diaper or a poop diaper.

If it is a pee diaper then it does not need to be sprayed with the bidet douche and can be thrown in the wash.

Is it a poop diaper? Then remove the molton insert with poop from the tie diaper, hang it over the edge of the toilet, ‘and now comes the golden tip’: spray water with the bidet and jet the poop from the molton inserts into the toilet. You can also spray the buttock wipes with this before putting them in the wash if needed.

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 26

After you have sprayed all the day’s poopy diapers clean you then sort the molton inserts from the poop diapers and put them in a diaper bucket.

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 27

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 28

We collect the inserts and baby wipes in the black bucket, and the tie diapers in the green bucket, the buckets are 15 liters each.

The handy thing about this ‘duo pedal bin 2 x 15 liters’ is that it is kind of airtight so that you do not get any ‘unhealthy’ smelly smells in the house from the diapers. This bucket is placed on our landing close to the toilet door and laundry baskets, so you can easily keep everything together.

It is useful because after 2 to 3 days, when the buckets are full, we know exactly that it is time for a diaper wash, as this fits in the average washing machine.

If you have a newborn, it will go a bit faster at first with changing the diapers, so on average you will have to wash the diapers every other day. And with two children in the diapers you also will have to wash more often.

When the two buckets are full, it is time for a diaper wash. Approximately 20 to 25 diapers are being washed, plus a number of buttock wipes.

The black bucket with inserts / liners and baby wipes can go straight into the washing machine, but the green bucket with tie diapers cannot. These tie diapers must be placed in a laundry bag per 2 tie diapers to prevent the strings of the tie diapers from becoming tangled.

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 29

We set the washing machine to 40 degrees, with prewash and 1400 rpm. We also use the ‘short’ function, which makes the time go from 3 hours to 1 hour and 26 minutes.

You can also wash it at 60 degrees if you feel necessary. The diapers can even be heated up to 90 degrees, but we think this is unnecessary.

We use soap nuts to wash the diapers, but also for all our other clothes, but you can also make this yourself with self-picked horse chestnuts in the fall.

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 30

We usually order a box of 5 kilos of soap nuts, this is much cheaper than the small boxes in the market, they last a very long time and are much cheaper than commercial soap and completely natural, so much healthier for the skin and better for the earth.

We dissolve about 12 soap nuts in a liter bottle of water, fill this bottle with hot water, and then pour it into a handy dosing bottle the next day. This way you have your own homemade liquid laundry soap to wash your clothes with, do your dishes with, or even wash your hair with if you want.

You can also make 5 liters soap at once in a tap with 50 nuts, so you have a nice supply of liquid nut soap and you don’t have to keep making more.

We pour a dash of this liquid nut soap into the drawer of the washing machine where you normally pour the liquid soap with each load. The soap nuts also smell very nice.

When the laundry is done, remove it from the drum and remove the tie diapers from the laundry bags.

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 31

Hang the diapers on the clothesline.

Pull the tie diapers apart a little on the sides at the bottom so that the straps dry a little wider. This will be nice when putting on the diaper so that you can wrap the diaper more nicely around your child’s belly.

We then hang up the inserts and hang them with an angle over the washing line. In our opinion, they dry fastest because they hang single, double hanging takes too long.

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 32

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 33

It is of course best to hang the diapers outside in the warmer months of the year, so they will dry very quick en smell the best. In winter it also fits nicely on a mobile laundry rack.

We hang the baby wipes in the middle of the clothes rack by not unfolding the middle clothes line row, so that 1 wash of diapers fits exactly on 1 clothes rack.

After this, when the laundry is dry, we fold the diapers again as we went through at the beginning, put them in the drawer of the changing table and it is ready for the next round.

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 35

These booster cloths are also nice, more compact than the 40×40 molton insert cloths or the hydrofile 80×80 cloths, and especially nice for your newborn child when they are still so small.

Also useful as a booster for the night if your child pees a lot, but what you can also do is not to give them too much to drink just before going to bed in the evening, then they will generally stay dry all night ‘if they do not drink breastmilk anymore’.

Another tip is that if the navel still needs to dry of your newborn child, it is smart to put the diaper on in such a way that the navel is not covered, so that the navel dries a little easier than having a wet diaper constantly moving over it. You can then put the diaper on a little lower and pull the side flaps that you put around your child down a little more instead of over the navel and belly, so there is a greater chance that your child will have a very nice navel when fully dried.

The bidet shower / douche

In the early months of our first child, during ‘the yellow diapers’ we still washed the diapers by hand, fun to do, and it makes you strong, it honours God to do things with your hands, later ‘with wisdom from above’ we came up with the idea of the bidet shower douche and this saves us a lot of time.

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 36

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 37

Hang the molton insert with poop in the edge of the toilet and spray it with a bidet shower douche. You literally spray the poop from the liner straight into the toilet pot. And then the liner can be thrown straight into the wash, requiring minimal work and works very clean.

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 38

After trying a bidet, we found the spray disappointing and we contacted a store and asked which one gave the hardest spray, because the harder the bidet sprays water, the faster the molton insert becomes clean.

We were recommended this bidet in the photo above and we like it, you can adjust it very nicely with a lever and so you can easily determine how hard the water jet sprays.

The handle is also made of hard plastic, so you will not get cold hands in winter.

When you have finished rinsing the diapers, dry the toilet with a molton flanel liner. This is useful because the job makes a small amount of water mist, which makes the toilet rim slightly wet.

You can connect the bidet to the shower hose, this is the cheapest way, but you can also make a connection under the sink with a wall holder on the wall to hang the bidet, highly recommended because you use the bidet every day.

You can also use the bidet to wash your bottom body part, then you save a lot of money on toilet paper and it is good for the earth because you do not throw away toilet paper. Toilet paper has also been treated and bleached with chlorine and this is unhealthy for your body, so it is smart to use less toilet paper.

The Bidet: Bidet Spray Toilet Handdouche CB01

And possibly these extras:

Hose: Glossy Chrome slang 120cm Double Locked Anti Twist

The great thing about this hose is that it can be used under permanent pressure.

Wall holder: Chrome Wall holder Elegant

Technical information for the man:

Possibly a stop valve so that you do not get a leak when you are away from home. The bidet is under constant pressure and that is why a stop valve can be useful. Constant pressure is fine, but there is always a risk of leakage.

Round Chrome Wall holder / stop valve

If you screw the bidet onto the shower hose, you have no risk of leakage because you then have a drain in the shower tray when you are not using it, and you can also close it so that the pressure is off, this is the cheapest option and also functional, only when you take a shower you have to exchange the bidet with the shower head, so that makes it a bit inconvenient.

Since you will probably use the bidet a lot, I would recommend that you make it right with a holder and a stop valve.

Lanolize the woollen overpants / diaper cover

Wasbare strikluiers, Washable tie diapers, Tie Nappy 25

Occasionally lanolize the woollen overpants so that they remain water-repellent, as follows:

Wool is one of the most beautiful clothing materials that God has given us, it naturally contains wool fat (lanolin), this is the skin fat of the sheep that comes on the wool and has special properties. You can soften, protect and make your clothing water-repellent using lanolin, which makes wool a beautiful natural product and a gift from God, wool even provides warmth when it is wet.

Before you start lanolizing, first check whether the pants are still clean. If you find them dirty, first wash the used wool pants with some warm water and possibly a little nut soap or other natural soap. You can then lanolize the wool trousers again.

Stubborn stains can be treated with ox gall soap.

Step 1: Preparing a lanolin bath

  • Put a layer of hot water in the bucket, add a drop of natural soap and a large teaspoon of lanolin;
  • stir well until the lanolin has dissolved in the water;
  • then top up with cold water until the water feels lukewarm (20 – 30°C). The water may feel greasy.

Step 2: Put the woollen overpants in the water. You are not allowed to rub woolen clothing, but this is allowed when lanolizing woollen overpants, because when the woollen overpants are felted they become even more water-repellent. It is best to put the wool pants inside out in the lanolin bath.

Step 3: Allow the lanolin to soak into the wool for a few minutes, or even overnight, the result will be slightly better if overnight. Then squeeze out the woollen overpants and place them to dry on a drying rack. Do not rinse the lanolin because the wool should now feel greasy, but this will slowly diminish with use.

For new wool trousers before they are used:

To use the woollen overpants, it is useful to first lanolize the woollen overpants about 3 times.

Let the lanolin sit for a few hours and then do it again. The woollen overpants do not need to dry in between. After the third or fourth time you can squeeze out the wool trousers. If necessary, roll the wool trousers firmly between two towels to get as much water out of them as possible, and then let them dry. The woollen overpants are then ready for first use. Your baby will have very soft legs from the lanolin and that makes it all the more pleasant.

Buy a good, natural and suitable lanolin, the more natural the better for your child.

And possibly ox gall soap to remove stains.

Diaper bag

If you are away from home it is also nice to put together a diaper bag containing a number of diapers, a foldable cotton pad for changing clothes and diapers, a jar of wet washable baby wipes, a jar of coconut oil for sore bottoms, and possibly a jar of homemade chickweed salve, and a waterproof laundry bag to put the dirty diapers in. (tip, do not take a bag that is too big, you do not need that much)

See the website under the heading ‘downloads’, ‘health and family’, for how to make Chickweed salve yourself.

Have fun with your washable diapers
